Hobbies & Pastimes: Why Free Time Is Never Wasted Time
What do you like to do in your free time? I'm a huge crafter so I always take pleasure in that. Other people I know enjoy woodworking, cake decorating, golf, photography, knitting, or hiking.
I also know people who believe that free time is wasted time — that being "busy" seems virtuous and important. Although it may seem logical and grown-up, that attitude can be counter-productive.
Benefits of Hobbies and Pastimes
- They promote flow – we tend to be invigorated by active leisure – losing ourselves in activities we enjoy.
- They decrease stress and recharge our batteries – we're doing something enjoyable and it feels good. That office blow-up doesn't seem that serious.
- They give us balance – hobbies help keep things in perspective and show us that it's okay to take time for ourselves.
- They encourage connections – even solitary hobbies can lead to conversations with people who share your interests.
- They make us richer – our interests add layers to our personality and give us something to talk about and share with others.
Make Time for What You Love
Don't be so quick to scratch hobbies from your to-do list. In fact, you'll be emotionally healthier and happier if you give them a prominent place on it. It works for me — Sunday afternoons are "enjoy my crafts time" and I wouldn't give them up for anyone! Give it a shot and see if you don't feel more calm, cheerful and relaxed. I bet you do!
